Cuba
In December of 2000 I was staying at the Ritz Hotel overlooking Central Park and the Capitol building in Havana, Cuba. People welcomed me into their homes and shared meals and at night the music from the cafes was everywhere. The police were very visible and I was told that they are there to protect the tourists from the local population. I never had a problem with either. I went back in April the next year for a more extensive trip into the country.
